The Rezum BPH treatment is one of the least invasive and most effective procedures to treat an enlarged prostate.

The Rezum BPH treatment is one of the least invasive and most effective procedures to treat an enlarged prostate. Otherwise known as Rezum therapy, the Rezum BPH treatment is a minimally-invasive procedure that utilizes water vapour to treat benign prostate hyperplasia- also known as BPH or prostate enlargement.

Who is the Rezum BPH treatment suitable for?

The Rezum BPH treatment may be a suitable option for men who are experiencing troublesome urinary symptoms as a result of having an enlarged prostate. These symptoms may include:

  • Straining to begin urination
  • Having a weak flow of urine
  • Urine flow that stops and starts
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder completely
  • An increased need to urinate frequently
  • Interrupted to sleep due to the need to urinate frequently during the night (known as nocturia).

Your specialist urologist may suggest Rezum BPH treatment as an appropriate solution if you:

  • Have urinary symptoms that are associated with having an enlarged prostate and want a minimally-invasive treatment option
  • Do not wish to use daily medications to control urinary symptoms associated with prostate enlargement (this may be due to cost, side-effects or inconvenience)
  • Want to improve your quality of life to that of what it was prior to the onset of your prostate symptoms.

What are the benefits of having the Rezum BPH treatment?

The Rezum BPH treatment can be a safe, relatively simple, and minimally-invasive procedure that can provide long-term relief from the troublesome urinary symptoms associated with having an enlarged prostate. Recovery is faster compared with traditional procedures for prostate enlargement.

The Rezum BPH treatment eliminates the need for lifelong use of costly medications by the patient, since it is a long-term solution.

When compared to traditional surgery for an enlarged prostate, the Rezum BPH procedure has a significantly reduced risk of retrograde ejaculation or sexual dysfunction.

How is the Rezum BPH treatment performed?

The Rezum BPH treatment is usually performed as a day surgery, but some patients may need to stay in hospital overnight. The Rezum BPH treatment can take as little as ten minutes to complete, in some patients.

Following the Rezum BPH treatment, most patients will require the placement of a urinary catheter. The catheter will help with urine drainage post-treatment, as the prostate will have some swelling. This will usually need to remain in place for 3-5 days. For most patients, normal activities can be resumed within 24-28 hours.

In the initial 4-6 weeks following the Rezum BPH treatment, some patients may experience mild discomfort when urinating, an increased need to urinate, and in some cases small amounts of blood in the urine or the ejaculate.

Maximal improvement in symptoms usually occurs at around 3 months following the Rezum BPH treatment.

What can a patient expect following the Rezum BPH treatment?

During most Rezum BPH treatment reviews, most patients report an improvement in their urinary flow, urinary pressure, and bladder emptying. This improvement can occur as early as two weeks following the Rezum PBH treatment. Bladder symptoms such as urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia typically take a little longer (sometimes up to around 3 months) to improve following the Rezum BPH treatment.

Normal sexual function is preserved in the vast majority of patients who have the Rezum BPH treatment
